Types of Aid

Military Tuition Assistance

HIU is committed to advancing education opportunities for active-duty military members serving in the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Coast Guard. Through a benefit called tuition assistance, or TA, active-duty service members can take classes in pursuit of a college degree.

TA covers $250 per semester hour, with a yearly cap, but each service area has its own criteria, application process, and restrictions.

TA Scholarships

Active duty US military personnel receive a $65 per unit discount for courses in master's degree programs and $200 per unit tuition rate for online undergraduate courses.

Process for using your TA Benefits

  1. Work with your Educational Services Officer (ESO) to receive approval prior to enrollment.
  2. Apply to Tuition Assistance benefits through your service area.
  3. Complete your TA Certification Request form after you have enrolled in coursework prior to every semester for which you want to receive TA Educational benefits.
  4. HIU will certify enrollment and submit for payment after the add/drop deadline for students to receive entitled funds.

Free Aid vs. Student Loans

When it comes to financing your education, be sure to look to your lowest cost option first, including grants, scholarships and all military benefits.

If you need more funds to cover your costs a student loan may be a choice to consider.

Student loans should be utilized only after you have exhausted all other opportunities.

Student loans carry interest rates and fees and must be repaid.

Questions to Ask Before Borrowing:

  • What’s the interest rate?
  • Is there a maximum amount you can borrow? Can you borrow more than the cost of your education?
  • What will your minimum payment be? When does repayment begin? How long do you have to repay? Is there a prepayment penalty?
  • What happens if you can’t make your payments due to a job loss or other economic hardship?
  • All of these questions, and more, including a repayment calculator can be found at: http://www.direct.ed.gov/student.html
